Why is it important you attend the Best Practices Practices Conference? I can’t vouch for everyone, but I think my sessions will be great (and all the other speaker’s sessions as well). One of them is something I’ve been working on in concept for at least 6 months. This session is called Building A Rich Media Application in Silverlight. The second I saw the tools for webcam and video integration I thought how can we incorporate this into SharePoint? How cool would it be if you could record a netcast ...
Cloud services platforms are still in their infancy considering the size of the market, but big players like Microsoft, IBM, Amazon, and Google have made significant investments for the future in offering cloud services in some form or the other. In this section, I will outline the offerings of some cloud services providers: Amazon Web Services Amazon is the largest online retailer in the world, and to support its daily operations, Amazon has one of the most advanced data centers in the world. Processing ...

I’ve been quiet lately for many reasons, such as SharePoint Saturday New York and heavy amounts of travel due to funerals and family events and life. So I think a lot of you have been wondering what is this Women in SharePoint thing? How does it fit into the community? Well, there are five of us, Kathryn Birstein, Cathy Dew, Lori Gowin, Karuana Gitamu, and myself. A year ago from this past June I wrote a blog post how I felt being a woman in SharePoint. It feels great to live in this era, because ...
http://www.microsoft.com/vi... Finally, I can blog about this interesting piece of technology from Microsoft. For beginner to intermediate developers (1-4 years), this piece of technology will WOW you. I’ll admit, how can you not be impressed by pointing to a database, saying “alakazam”, click a couple of buttons, and blammo, you have your own application! But after having been around the block a few times, I’m actually a little critical of this tool (which is rare). We’ve ...

I started training on SharePoint 2010 about 3 months ago and I decided that I needed to blog about the ease of developing Silverlight applications with Visual Studio 2010 for SharePoint 2010. In Visual Studio 2008 the methodology would be to: 1. Create a Silverlight application 2. Create the XAP file 3. Move the XAP file into a SharePoint document library or Layouts folder 4. Put a Silverlight Web part on a SharePoint page (not OOTB) a. Link the Silverlight web part to the XAP file 5. Debug the web ...

A friend sent me some links to funny Chuck Norris jokes about SharePoint

http://bjdavidson.wordpress.com/2010/03/10/chuck-norris-sharepoint/

Here's the link to the jokes I posted previously: http://geekswithblogs.net/kit/archive/2009/09/29/135153.aspx

A while back it was clear: Roses are red, violets are blue … if you are a dev you use Visual Studio. Now: Roses are blue, violets can be red … if you do SharePoint,Visual Studio is the right tool for you. I am not a poet, nor do I pretend to be one on TV. But I have invested time in fine tuning virtual machines and physical deployments in figuring out what goes where and what is needed. We see dependencies of every type, in every place and every product pretty much. If you are doing SQL Server 2008 ...

I was at a client location the other day and there was a need to configure PowerShell to back-up the SharePoint 2010 Farm after getting my commands ready and executing them it boomed out on me with the following errors Verbose: [Database_Name] SQL command timeout is set to 1.00 hours. While trying to delete a sharepoint web application, I received the following error: An object of the type Microsoft.SharePoint.Admini... named "Unprovisioning SharePoint - 80" already exists under the parent Microsoft.SharePoint.Admini... named "". Around the “Guild Hall” We had a great meeting in June. Brian Gough, our resident SharePoint expert, introduced some of the nifty new features in Visual Studio 2010 and SharePoint 2010. We still need to understand what comes “in the box” with SharePoint so we don’t run off and program something that already exists, but the ease of development – or maybe “ease of sensible development” – is greatly enhanced when VS 2010 is coupled with SharePoint 2010. Since SharePoint is one of Microsoft’s most successful ...
When publishing SharePoint 2010 Portal you encounter the following error “The form cannot be rendered. This may be due to a misconfiguration of the Microsoft SharePoint Server State Service. For more information, contact your server administrator. “ This issue is caused by lack of Session State Service which usually is a result of farm being configured manually. To fix the issue power up your PowerShell on the SharePoint Server and run the following commands, these commands will create a State Service ...

Since installing Option Pack 4 for Windows NT to get IIS running Classic ASP, we have all felt the lack of ease from Microsoft to actually create websites on a developer box. There has always been an expressed need to not need a custom configured machine to install Visual Studio and create web sites right away. Why must we open Windows Configuration and add all these pieces if a solution for our OS could be added to the development product line. My first development job was 10 years ago when I worked ...
I was setting up a Sharepoint foundation 2010 to integrate with Reporting Services. But to get this working you will need to install the SSRS 2008 version of the add-in or the SSRS 2008 R2 version of the add-in This will depend on the Windows 2008 server OS you are using. But i kept getting the error on the Windows 2008 Server R2 box as i was trying to install the rsSharePoint_x64.msi which is for the SSRS 2008 version of the add-in i later noticed there was another one just for the SSRS 2008 R2 ...

I was recently on a project that required me to move SharePoint content to SQL Database. As I searched the best way to do this, I thought of a timer job that would run nightly and move the data to SQL, a co-worker who is a SQL expert suggested I use SSIS to move the data over. I started searching online and came up with a couple of options the most notable being the technet article. The problem with the example on technet is that it uses a custom connector that connect one Document library or List ...
Let’s develop a SharePoint WebPart for executing BAM SSIS Packages. The SharePoint site can be on remote server other than the BizTalk Database Server. This won’t be a fancy UI WebPart, just a basic dropdown to select a BAM SSIS Package and execute it. ;-) The approach I am used is of using a asp.net User Control hosted as a sharepoint webpart. There are bunch of different ways you can develop Sharepoint webpart. This is just one of them and easier one. Less error prone and easily debug able. · Create ...

My first inplace upgrade of a MOSS 2007 farm to sharepoint went pretty smooth. I read the preupgrade documentation and was comfortable with the steps. Since it was a fairly new installation of Moss changes were minimal and I wasn't anticipating too many problems The one issue I got was after installing the software on all of the farm. I went to the first machine which ran Sharepoint 2010 central administration and ran the Sharepoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard. I received the message that ...

While i was trying to setup some reports on a SPF 2010 site. After trying to add a Sql Reporting Webpart i get the error: Session state has been disabled for ASP.NET. The Report Viewer control requires that session state be enabled in local mode I never came across that error before when using RSWebaprts in Sharepoint 2007:) But i think is related to ASP.NET sessions state:( Any to fix it you would have to start to make sure the SharePoint Server ASP.NET Session State Service is enabled. The question came up today if we could use an “app_offline.htm” file along with HTML in that file that would reference images. First, I wasn’t 100% sure if the app_offline.htm would work, but it sure did. Since it’s just the Asp.net hosting process that detects the file, it circumvents loading any HttpApplications (SharePoint) beyond just serving up the HTML content. The second question was about having something more than text, specifically <img> tags. So, since the HttpHandlers are taking ...

When a Southern “boy” like me sees somebody that used to be, or should be, a close friend or relative that they haven’t seen in a long time, that’s a typical greeting. Come to think of it, we were often related to close friends. So “back in the day”, we not only knew people but everybody close to them. When I started driving, my Dad told me to always drive carefully in Polk county. He said if I ran into anybody there, it was likely they would be related or close family friends. Not so much any more… ...
Next week marks the first full week of June. Summer will feel in full swing and it will be a pretty big season for technology. In seeming acknowledgement of that very fact, both Apple and Microsoft will be holding large developers conferences starting Monday. Apple will hold its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in lovely San Francisco and Microsoft will hold its Tech Ed conference in muggy, oil-laden yet soulful New Orleans. A brief survey of each show reveals much about the differences ...
