I had the pleasure of speaking with Joe Homnick today about the Open Data Protocol. I presented an example on consuming OData in an MVC solution using jQuery. Joe presented on consuming OData feeds in SharePoint 2010/Silverlight 4.0 as well as a nice sample on setting up an OData service interface. I appreciate the opportunity to speak at a user group known for consistently bringing in only the very best speakers and content. At the end of the talk, I was presented with a certificate of appreciation ...

It has been over a year since the last time I updated my list of Florida technical communities and a lot has changed since then. Joe Healy, our Florida Microsoft Developer Evangelist, maintains a list for each of the main areas in Florida, but this only covers the .NET-focused groups. Taking what he has started, I have put together a similar list (based on the information Joe maintains) that covers the other technical communities that I know of. If you are part of a technical user group community ...

In today’s world, agility and flexibility are two vital assets that every company must have in order to stay on course. Organizations that can adjust to market trends and rise to meet new challenges are the ones that will come out on top. Having the technology to communicate on an ad-hoc basis and meet in real-time collaboration with co-workers and decision-makers allows for many businesses to do just that. However, many companies are still stuck on old communications technologies that cause for ...

I’m at the SharePoint 2010 Connections at Cascais, next to Lisbon. The setting is amazing. I really like the talk by Dan Holme. I always knew I was an IT Pro at heart.

Anybody else out there is here?

Joe Homnick, Microsoft Regional Director, was the speaker at both Florida.Net’s Ft Lauderdale ArcSig and West Palm Beach .Net User Group September 2010 meetings where he shared with us how to leverage Silverlight 4.0 WebParts in a SharePoint 2010 solution. I was lucky enough to be nominated to receive the Windows Phone 7 from a representative at Microsoft. The phone that was given to me was the LG GW910. Please note that this phone is not mine, it’s going back in a couple of weeks. The review of the phone below is my personal opinion. Keep reading to find out if I’m actually going to buy one and to see other screen shots. Back to the phone, the first thing that I did was remove the sim card from my iPhone 3G and drop it into the WP7. It immediately ...
My last project had me do some SharePoint 2010 Ribbon customizations. I though I would blog about some of the things I learned! There are many ways to create a Ribbon component. You could use a custom action to a tab to an existing Ribbon or in the case that I will be discussing/demonstrating is creating a complete new tab for a SharePoint Application page. The steps developer should take : Work through the Hand-On Lab provided by Microsoft on Customizing the Ribbon. This is part of The SharePoint ...

I had the pleasure to attend the Microsoft Mid-Atlantic Community Leadership Summit at the Microsoft Training Center in Reston, VA on Saturday. Due to logistics I was uncertain if I would be able to attend. Many thanks to Jess for enabling me to go and participate. It was a very beneficial event. There were a lot of smart people with great experience contributing good ideas to better the Microsoft development community. We started by introducing ourselves. There were around 40 in attendance so this ...

The past few months I’ve been playing architect and admin, rather than developer. I have worked with a couple 2010 environments for play and work and at least one upgrade. So here are just a few tidbits that you might not know that I’ve found… When working with the blank site definition you have to activate the taxonomy features through stsadm if you want to use managed metadata. All right I admit, that's a very abstract title for a blog post, and its not eye catchy or snazzy as something like “What to do when you get a “Object reference not set to an instance of an object. exception on a SharePoint farm that uses SQLSessionState. “ But hey its supposed to grab your attention if you are having this problem. Ok so the error is Server Error in '/' Application. Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution ...

For those who haven’t come across it, PowerPivot is Microsoft’s Excel- and SharePoint-based self-service BI tool. Essentially, it allows power users to build their own SQL Server Analysis Services cubes, except that they don’t need to be familiar with cube concepts and they won’t even notice that SSAS is involved. The other exception from the Microsoft BI norm is that these cubes use a new columnar, in-memory storage engine, called VertiPaq, rather than Analysis Services’ traditional MOLAP (Multidimensional ...
Here I had a plan to post in September almost the same way I did in May, June and July, but business has been good (and I hope to not jinx it). There has been plenty of stuff going on, TFS 2010 left and right, MSDN Forums, SharePoint (all flavors and variations), BizTalk, SQL Server, Commerce Server, even Host Integration Server. And of course Hyper-V. A lot has been explored and equal in the realm of learning. From writing a Microsoft Official Course, giving self-publishing a try, creating some ...
(This is a series of posts covering how to include a WinForm app inside a SharePoint 2007 application, which allows users to upload batches of files to a SharePoint document library. For further info, please see Posts One, Two, and Three. All of the code can be downloaded in Post Two.) Just a quick review of our solution, as detailed in the first three posts of this series: a Custom Action adds a menu choice to a document library’s Upload menu, which links to a Windows Form application deployed using ...
August for some reason has been the busiest month I recall in a while. It has had a good doze of the products I love to work with, and it has given me the opportunity to get into one more, Azure. There has been BizTalk Server, SharePoint, SQL Server and Team Foundation Server and the surrounding tools. But I have been enjoying working with Azure. It’s a nice complexity full of good stuff (so far). In working with a client’s deployment the task came to needing to monitor the implementation. And since ...

All of the code can be downloaded in Post Two.) As I promised several months ago, I’ll cover the Custom Action piece of our solution. The custom action is used to allow the users to launch our Windows Forms application using Click Once deployment. One of my clients wanted to have over the set limit of left navigation (Quick Launch) links to allow ease of access for their clients. SharePoint 2010 has a default setting of 20 links for the Quick Launch. I have been working with a client that has several metadata property mappings. One of them being a "Yes\No" FIeld. The client has a "Confidential" field wich is really a check box. If a document is confidential then it is checked off, by default all documents are NOT confidential therefore, they field is un-checked. Well needless to say during a search query on that field, it would say, "error occured" What the "H" is going on here!!?? looking at the windows logs didn't help as it was complaining ...
This summer Inmeta ASA, a leading Norwegian IT company, bought Osiris Data. It means we’re now more than 150 consultants, up from 30 as we were. It means a lot for us, as we now can take on larger projects, more projects and with even more colleagues we will have better competency on more areas. It is also very exciting to be in a larger company, be “exposed” to more projects and more opportunities. Osiris Data was founded late autumn 1996, and started operation in January 1997, with 3 people. The ...

I was working on a a DWP using Sharepoint Designer and i wanted to get the value of a node using Jquery So i added a <div id="myid"></div> and then on the client did some $(div#miyd) But what i noticed is that anytime i save my page in Sharepoint Designer and open it up again my div id changes to <div id="myid{generate-id()}">... So i came across some solution from Marcs Blog here which suggested you add a variable like so <xsl:variable name="myid/> and then use it ...
The good on the story is that migrations just keep on getting better, and actually never have been bad. This time around there was a curveball, and it came from the SharePoint side of things. SharePoint, it is no secret, can be temperamental when it comes to patches and cumulative updates. Add to that temperamental side a version migration/upgrade, now this just elevated concern and risk. Now, for the time being, I had to do what was best for the situation, and that warranted an uninstallation, and ...
Microsoft just announced new Power Tool for TFS 2010 which greatly simplifies setting up backups and performing restores. Can’t wait for this new release. Brian Harry shares all the details on his blog post so I won’t get into all the details here. I will say, however, that this is another GREAT step from the TFS team at Microsoft to simplify the administration and maintenance. The barriers to adoption just keep getting knocked down. (UPDATE) Brian’s new post indicates that this Power Tool also manages ...
I am blogging this as I hope to prevent anyone else spending extra time on this. I was having problems with a content type/site columns feature. Actually everything was working correctly except choice fields were not displaying: I should have been guided by the fact that I could do it in a Console application but not in a feature! However, I am getting a little older and my mind is still “Tarp as a Shack” you get it! The problem is that in Sandboxed solutions intellisense is not pared to the subset ...
I was playing around with some scripts today while I was working on an upgrade. I didn’t want to individually write out the names of files in a batch file and I wanted to create a quick Powershell Script. If you are using SharePoint 2010 you can use these lines of code in the Powershell Manager to deploy only .wsp files to your SharePoint 2010 Web Applications: $dir = [directory] $list = Get-ChildItem $dir | where {$_.extension -eq ".wsp"} foreach($my_file in Get-ChildItem $list){Add-SPSolution -LiteralPath ...
I recently passed both of the Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Administration exams (70-667 & 70-668) and I’ve been asked what I used to study for them. First, here are some free resources that I used: http://sharepoint.microsoft... http://technet.microsoft.co... http://channel9.msdn.com/le... ...
We got this error while creating site collection or even opening a page in edit mode. We tried to find out the root cause of this problem but could not find much. But we have identified few things that can cause the problem. 1) You must know that we should dispose SharePoint (SPWeb, SPSite etc.) objects after using them. But you should be very careful that the Dispose() method is called at the correct time / using block is used intelligently. Otherwise the application may behave inconsistently. 2) ...
I have recently started to look at EDI communications through BizTalk. Part of the EDI features in BizTalk is the use of BAM to track messaging. Amongst the applications we currently have built in BizTalk we do some SharePoint communication. This is also a possible component to our EDI solution. We also have plans to move to BizTalk 2010 in the near future, so today I started to build my new BizTalk Dev machine. I got a bit of a surprise when 2 parts of the required set had me setting a flag “Enable ...
I found it very odd that this was not available when doing some search engine queries. My requirement was to take in an AD user name and query SharePoint 2010 to determine the SharePoint groups in which the account belongs. The code was to run from within a RIA Authentication Service, which is code run on a server and is not likely on the SharePoint server. This code will also work with SharePoint 2007 (WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007). You will need to add a Web Reference to http(s)://<spservername&... ...
In this blog and in my column, I’ve written a lot lately about new technologies from Microsoft that seek to make software development easier. Technologies like ASP.NET Web Pages, Razor and WebMatrix, Access Web Databases and Visual Studio LightSwitch. Each of these technologies, I believe, is bringing much needed accessibility to programming on the Microsoft platform. I’ve also written about Windows Phone 7 which, despite extreme skepticism in the press and analyst communities, has the potential ...
Over the past several years social media has grown from just a few sites to a booming industry. With the wealth of information and entertainment available on sites like YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, it is easy to see where it has come from and why it has stuck. Little wonder why people, developers and companies have sought to leverage the connections found on social media outlets to further careers, sell products or just plain connect to the rest of the world. Recently, I had been asked to develop ...

Why is it important you attend the Best Practices Practices Conference? I can’t vouch for everyone, but I think my sessions will be great (and all the other speaker’s sessions as well). One of them is something I’ve been working on in concept for at least 6 months. This session is called Building A Rich Media Application in Silverlight. The second I saw the tools for webcam and video integration I thought how can we incorporate this into SharePoint? How cool would it be if you could record a netcast ...
