Full Disclaimer: Since I am on the GeeksWithBlog.NET Influencer list, I was issued a free 1-year subscription to DiscountASP.NET TFS2010 remote hosting. With that said, the thoughts/opinions located below are my own. I’ve always like Team Foundation Server. The main thing that I’ve hated about it was installing/maintaining it. I’d rather spend that time learning more about things such as Silverlight/WPF/WP7. I really didn’t know what to expect as we use another source control at work and I’ve never ...

Although it is late notice, I thought I would put up a plug for a free webinar. SharePoint MVP Paul Stork and I are presenting on Best Practices for SharePoint 2010 Public Facing Sites. I would love to go in to all of the topics on this post, but it would be easier if you just joined the webinar. Heck, it is free! Check it out here. Hope to see you there. 4/11/2011 Update: At the request of some followers ShareSquared has provided a link to the recorded version of the webinar. Now if you missed something ...
New York City was always this fantasy far away that I couldn't touch. I'm not sure it's really New York, but a place that was outside of St. Louis. A place that was outside this whole midwestern bubble I lived in when I was a kid. All I had was school and baseball, because well everything else wasn't so great when I until after I turned 18. When I was 18 I had this really great summer and it felt like everything was changing. It was the beginning of my life. I had no idea what that summer meant, ...

I recently did some training for a client and one of the topics that came up was upgrading existing 2007 code to SharePoint 2010 Projects. I just wanted to share some of the issues that came up and the discussion that might be usefull to others. If you developed customizations for SharePoint 2007 you either Visual Studio 2005/2008 VSeWSS 1.1/1.2/1.3 or you used WSPBuilder. A lot of fellow SharePoint MVP's and experienced SharePoint Developers used WSPBuilder. I personally prefered it over the VSeWSS ...
This is one of the very useful powershell scripts that I found for automatic content publishing and approval on sharepoint 2010. Yeah I know I don’t blog much anymore, because life has taken me places that don’t involve the interwebs unfortunately. I am in the midst of planning two events, starting a non for profit, creating more sessions for various conferences, submitting to various conferences, working a 40 hour a week job, attempting to hang out with boyfriend/friends/family. So you can see that list does not include this blog sadly that’s how it goes sometimes. The bottom piece very important over any of the top pieces. ...
There are four really cool national board members for Women in SharePoint, Cathy Dew, Nedra Allmond, Michelle Strah, and and Lori Gowin. Nedra is running Women in SharePoint West and she just also happens to be helping out with SharePoint Saturday LA. When building my latest SharePoint 2010 demo virtual machines, I decided to try installing Exchange 2010 as well. Now, I’m not an Exchange admin, but I thought “how hard can this be?” Well, a little more than I thought. Pretty early during the install, I got an error saying that it couldn’t “install Transport HUB”. I double checked that my VM was meeting all of the requirements, both hardware and software, and everything looked fine. After much researching, it turns out that the error was caused ...
I ran into an error message in SharePoint 2010 that took me a few minutes to figure out. I was working on a demo of SharePoint 2010’s managed metadata and getting an error when I was adding a Managed Metadata column to a library. A little Google research turned up this blog post: The Taxonomy feature (Feature ID "73EF14B1-13A9-416b-A9B5-EC... has not been activated. As Michal Pisarek pointed out last June, you get the error because the Taxonomy feature isn’t activated. Like Michal, I’m not ...

When using XPath in .NET one of the gotchas to be aware of is that all namespaces must be named, otherwise you’ll end up with no results. Default namespaces that are specified with xmlns alone still need to be recognized in the XPath query! Say I had a bit of XML like what is returned from the QueryService web service in Sharepoint: 1: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> 2: <ResponsePacket xmlns="urn:Microsoft.Search... 3: <Response> 4: <Range> 5: ... 6: <Results> ...
Last week I was fortunate enough to spend time in Redmond on Microsoft’s campus for the 2011 Microsoft MVP Summit. It was great to hang out with a number of old friends and get the opportunity to talk tech with the various product teams up at Microsoft. The weather wasn’t exactly sunny but Microsoft always does a great job with the Summit and everyone had a blast (heck, I even got to run the bases at SafeCo field) While much of what we saw is covered under NDA, there a ton of great things in the ...
Over the last 2 weeks i was developing a tool to migrate Lotus notes data base to Share point. The mapping between Lotus notes schema and share point list schema was done manually in an xml file for out tool. To map the columns we wanted internal names of each field. There are quite a few ways to achieve this, have explained few below. If you want internal names for one or 2 columns you can do so by navigating to the list setting and clicking on the column name. Once you are in column's details, ...
In the last month or so I have been able to test and experience first hand the offering from discountasp.net for hosted TFS 2010. This first part is a description of the setup process for the account itself and getting some additional information on what you will find through the portal on their site. Not long ago, I posted a little tidbit on hosting TFS. Through it I also did a shameless plug to my employer, our services and the type of hosting we recommend. So, wouldn’t me running on discountasp.net ...

If you didn’t know, you probably will soon, the SPGridView is not available in Sandboxed solutions. To be honest there doesn’t seem to be a great deal of information out there about the whys and what nots, basically its not part of the Sandbox SharePoint API. Of course the error message from SharePoint is about as useful as punch in the face… An unexpected error has been encountered in this Web Part. Error: A Web Part or Web Form Control on this Page cannot be displayed or imported. You don't have ...
I've faced an issue that I wanted to display the date in the format of ('MMMM dd') that is retrieved from a sharepoint list in an arabic site collection. So, after googling this issue, I've found out that a possible solution to my poblem is using the function ddwrt:FormatDateTime that can be used as long as you'll include the following namespace xmlns:ddwrt="http://schemas... My purpose was solved by writing this line of code in my xsl code behind for the ...

Sitting on a window seat on my way back from Seattle I looked out the window and saw the large body of water. I was reminded of childhood memories of running as hard as I could through burning hot sand with the anticipation of the splash of the ocean. Looking out the window the water appeared like a sheet draped over land. I couldn’t help but ponder how perspective changes everything. Over the last several days I had a chance to attend the MVP Summit in Redmond. I had a great time with fellow MVP’s ...
Many applications need Claim Based Authentication instead of Classic Mode Authentication. The Form Based Authentication (FBA) is one type of Claim Based Authentication. The default login page of FBA in SharePoint 2010 is very simple which only provides a simple Login control with the user name, password and remember me option. But many developers want to implement a customized login page for a better looking experience or more options according to business requirements. Creating and Deploying a Custom ...
Billy Hollis, my Visual Studio Live! colleague and fellow Microsoft Regional Director said recently, and I am paraphrasing, that the computing world, especially on the consumer side, has shifted from one of building hardware and software that makes things possible to do, to building products and technologies that make things easy to do. Billy crystalized things perfectly, as he often does. In this new world of “easy to do,” Apple has done very well and Microsoft has struggled. In the old world, customers ...
The best intentions were having me at perhaps posting more than twice a month, and here we are and … well it has been busy. There has been a lot of SharePoint 2010 already in this first number of weeks of the year, a good amount of TFS 2010, but even better working quite actively on two topics that I enjoy quite a bit … Windows Azure and Application Lifecycle Management. And there is more to come around those two. Through the influencers program with Geekswithblogs and Discountasp.net I got access ...

It is that time again. Time to polish up you presentation skills on your favorite language or technology features. The Chicago Code Camp is accepting proposals for presentations. If you're wondering how to migrate your SharePoint databases to a new server, this Microsoft article is actually pretty useful, though still overly complex like most of their other articles. http://technet.microsoft.co... The one thing I would change is that they seem to recommend installing SQL Server Configuration Manager on web servers, when all that was needed in my case was to add an entry to the hosts file on the SharePoint web server that used the IP address of the ...
Consider the following: We have an account named MYDOMAIN\eholz. This accounts Active Directory Login Name changes to MYDOMAIN\eburrell Now this user was a active user in a Sharepoint 2010 team Site, and had a userProfile using the Account name MYDOMAIN\eholz. Since the AD LoginName changed to eburrell hence we need to update the Sharepoint User (SPUser object) as well update the userprofile to reflect the new account name. To update the Sharepoint User LoginName we can run the following stsadm command ...

Enterprises (large bureaucracies) obsess about risk. I think it is because of the inertia generated by the process and politics that they have to deal with. The trouble is that they respond to risk in precisely the wrong way: by adding complexity. Need to call a method? Better wrap it in WCF service. Need to talk to another application? Better hook a message queue to a service bus connected to a biztalk sharepoint – on Oracle. Here is a simple guide: Complexity increases risk. Simplicity reduces ...

I’m pleased to announce that a new XAML-Based User Group has started in Birmingham, Alabama. The group is being hosted by Michael Crump and Jonathan Marbutt. The reason is very simple: we feel that Birmingham needs a fresh start. We are both very passionate about .NET and are hoping to share our experiences with the community. We have created a site (http://allaboutxaml.net) and our first meetup is now scheduled. We are here to discuss all things that have to do with xaml. This includes Silverlight, ...

So I’ve been doing some upgrades just to see if things will work from 2007 to 2010. So far most of the stuff I want works, but obviously there are some things that break. Did you guys know that in 2007 you could add a webpart to the view pages for lists and libraries without losing the toolbar? In 2010 the ribbon disappears every time you add a webpart. So if you are using Scot Hillier’s Codeplex project to hide buttons it will not work the same way, because the ribbon is going to disappear altogether. ...
My grandmother wanted me to make her a video when she heard I got MVP in SharePoint Server of one of my sessions. I decided I haven’t visited in two years, so maybe I can do an in person session. A year or so back I was using the Boot from VHD feature lots – but not in recent times and not with my current laptop configuration (Lenovo T61p with 2nd internal hard drive). In readiness for the upcoming SharePoint 2010 training for UK ISVs in February I wanted to make use of a Microsoft created SharePoint 2010 VM, more specifically the VHD from the VM. It has taken me three hours on and off to get it to work – which must warrant a blog post, if only so I can remember what I did a year from now! ...
The last 6 to 8 months have been a blur. They have gone fast! Back in June I took part in a group that was creating content for Microsoft Learning to have it be their Microsoft Official Curriculum lineup for SharePoint 2010. In that process I noticed there was something different about SharePoint 2010 when compared to the wealth and quality of documentation that had been available when SharePoint 2007 was out. There is a lot of it! There is of course the MOC Offerings, and the material I worked on ...
