I’m just pulling together next Wednesday MSDN Flash newsletter and came across this gem. The last 12 months of releases from the Patterns and Practices team: Enterprise Library v4.1 is a collection of reusable software components that help developers with common development needs such as logging, validation, data access, and exception handling. They can be used “as is” or extended or modified by developers as needed. Unity Application Block v1.2 is a lightweight extensible dependency injection container ...
No this is not SharePoint or Silverlight related at all. Tomorrow is 09/09/09 and the Beatles, one of my favorite bands of all time aside from Green Day and Three Dog Night, are releasing there albums in digital format entirely remastered plus as a bonus Harmonix is releasing a special version of Rockband. I can probably throw away $60 for the game, but not so much the money for the remastered tracks. Growing up my dad was born in the 50’s, so his music was primary the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the ...
I have been grinding the midnight oil trying incredibly hard to make this event better than last year. Kevin Hughes, Brian Laird, and Bob Davis are helping me out tremendously. We’ve had some good speaker submissions and we are continuing to receive more (don’t worry still spots left if you are interested). We have total of 24 slots for speakers plus a keynote and 2 separate 101 sessions hosted by our local guys, Bob Davis and Howard Davy. We have just opened up registration at http://www.sharepointsaturd... ...
I’m participating in the Microsoft Gemini CTP (Gemini is the self-service BI component cooperatively provided by the forthcoming SQL Server 2008 R2, Excel 2010 and SharePoint 2010) and the SQL Azure CTP. I found intriguing the question of whether these two CTP technologies could be used together. Turns out they can! I successfully got Gemini to import data from a SQL Azure Database (after migrating the AdventureWorksDW2008 dimCurrency table into an Azure database called AWCloud)! I set up the connection ...

I started a series that I titled Mission Impossible. Read the Introduction if you have not already done so, you can find it here. This Post will cover the quota issue and some ideas I put out for the client to decide. This solution can be approached in two different ways, a passive approach and a pro active approach. Let me describe. Let me describe the problem first. A site collection exists with sub sites. The client wanted a quota set to a 2G limit on each sub site. There are no way that can be ...

The Winnipeg SharePoint UG is back for another year of events and presentations! This Month: Enhancing Connected SharePoint Lists in Outlook 2007 Eric Legault, Microsoft Outlook MVP It's really easy to link an Events, Contacts or Tasks list in WSS to Outlook 2007. But what if you had custom list fields or list views? These elements are not supported! But by using Visual Studio Tools for Office to build an Outlook COM Add-In consuming SharePoint Web Services, you can easily design a custom Form Region ...
What is Sharepoint? SharePoint is Microsoft's product in the Enterprise Portal, Content Management and Colloboration space. SharePoint is actually 2 products. Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) - This is what is bundled into Windows Server 2003 and later versions and includes the set of standard site templates for building web sites in SharePoint. In addition WSS includes version control, alerts, RSS feeds ans task notifications. WSS is bundled into Windows Server 2003 and greater and I believe that ...

This past week I was reminded of the “fun” in which hosting an application within SharePoint can present. We are developing a custom application for our client in which some areas must reside within a SharePoint environment. We did quite a bit of our development in this first iteration within a web application in order to pull things together and present the client with a working end-to-end “prototype.” The architecture is composed of several layers all of which will be “in process” communications ...

Changing the passwords from time to time is a healthy thing to do.

Here you are a nice link to do that in SharePoint accounts.

We have faced an issue before that some users when opening a document in SharePoint document library the internet explorer crashes.

After investigation I have found that this issue most pobably happens due to existance of several versions of office on the machine.

To solve that check these links:

We all know about the concept of Feature Stapling and most people write it out correctly on there blogs, such as this post: http://www.sharepointnutsan... However, I’ve noticed that very few blogs have the correct code to post in the FeatureActivated and FeatureDeactivating events. This is the correct code from looking at a CodePlex Project by Scott Hillier, looking at wrong code all over blogs, and debugging some code I cobbled together in Visual Studio to throw ...
A recent episode of .NET Rocks asked this very question, and listening to the episode made me consider my thoughts on the matter. [Disclaimer: Some of this post may be interpreted as “beating up on Microsoft”. This is not my intent. I use Microsoft in my examples because Microsoft development experiences have been the totality of my professional career. The issues I apply to Microsoft can assuredly be applied to any other company out there.] The short answer is “no”. I started writing software for ...

This is an interesting concept. Branch Cache can be very good in low bandwidth remote offices. If this solutions works, it will be a tremendous boost to SharePoint. Some of the complains that you hear about SharePoint implementation is that it is slow in low bandwidth offices. Branch caching may not help in a Collaboration situation where too much of read write is going on but for everything else it is a great tool. It caches everything, for pages to images to office docs. Here is a quick demo of ...
Over the last few months I have made the move to 64 bit – Windows 7 RTM on my laptop and Windows 2008 standard server with hyper-v on my dev box. I’m also running 64 bit Office 2010 and a number of other 64 bit goodies. But it is in the area of development I’m really having ‘fun’. So first off it was time to setup a 64 bit dev image: Windows Server 2008 R2 Std (64 bit) SQL Server 2008 (64 bit) Visual Studio 2008 (32 bit only) BizTalk 2009 Developer Edition (64 bit) Windows SharePoint Server 3.0 (64 ...
I feel a series coming on! I have been involved with a client to develop and customize their present SharePoint Environment. I have incorporated several solutions I would like to share. It was a learning experience and it was definitely Fringe SharePoint!!! The purpose of this post is to set up the scenario and to describe all the factors that were involved with the decision making of the overall solution. I hit several walls and blocking issues and feel it's important for anyone doing anything remotely ...

This post is the fifth in a series of postings, containing examples of SharePoint WebParts that anybody can build all by themselves. To read all posts in this series, or to get started with the RSSBus WebPart, go here. #5 – QuickBooks Web Part! I accidently overwrote the original post. Sorry about that. Below are the steps for the QuickBooks webpart. If there are other QB searches you need to do, I can help with that. The RSSBus QBOps Connector has a ton of functionality. Before we had Azure and the various bits and pieces that became Azure at PDC 2008 Microsoft had a number of disparate groups working on various ‘cloudy’ projects. these included BizTalk Services, Red dog, Mesh and the Live framework to name a few. Then at PDC 2008 with the wave of a marketing teams wand they all be became Azure or Azure Services or Azure platform or …well anyway the over-arching message was that they were all part of Azure!! Furthermore we were presented with the vision below… Now ...

We have a document library which makes use of the 'Link to a Document' content type which lets users add links to a document library. We noticed that users were using this feature to add links to documents hosted on sites outside of the SharePoint farm. This is all good as far as they are concerned because the content type does its job and end-user can access the external documents by clicking the link. However, we noticed that none of these links were showing up in the search results. When we looked ...
If you were to restart (i.e stop and then start) the search service, in a SharePoint farm, from the 'Services on server' page in Central Administration chances are that you might encounter both or either of the following errors when yo do a search on your web application: Your search cannot be completed because of a service error. Try your search again or contact your administrator for more information. The search request was unable to connect to the Search Service. This happens because after restarting ...
ASP.Net does not provide a rich text box control in its set of web controls. So, if you need to place a rich text box on your SharePoint page you'll have to use a commercial, free or open source text box control (and there are plenty out there). However if you don't want to introduce another dependency, in the form of an external control, you can use SharePoint's built-in rich text box. If you're creating a page layout that binds to a content types field then its straight forward and you can use ...
During my project that is heavily centered around web services, I often found that before I could execute one overall integration, I would need about 3 or 4 web Service calls to collect all the parameters I needed to actually call the web service call I was really trying to execute. I came across an interesting situation where I need to retrieve the List from SharePoint. A web service call will send back an XMLElement with all the information available for a list. The problem is that the list needs ...
I am currently on a project that consists of an integration between a web application and SharePoint. Both applications live in their own servers and so it was necessary to use web services. I have come to many weird glitches and many unresolved issues at this time, I will make an effort to document as much as possible to save people time when working with WCF, SharePoint Web Services, and Visual Studio 2008.0 The first issue I'm going to write about is fairly easy to identify but it was frustrating ...

In debugging a lot of large log files in SharePoint you need to use a nice tool to help you.

I have used this tool and i have found that it is a nice and easy one.

In the mix of things we were the 2nd SharePoint Saturday event and I think we can do far better. I wanted to have a free conference with 2010 content that people didn’t have to pay for if they couldn’t afford SPC. So we are now finally confirmed for Saturday, December 12th at Johnson Country Community College Regnier Center. This event will be bigger (250 is the cap) and far better. I have a lot of good people helping me out including Brian Laird, Kevin Huges, and Bob Davis. St. Louis is working ...

This is a very cool video, describing SharePoint’s collaboration strengths.

If you faced an issue with document library when trying to open files in edit mode they are opened in read only mode with no ability to edit in it.

There are a lot of reasons for that among it is some configurations in the load balancer.

I’m not attending SPS NY (or at least I think I will not attend), so I pulled out my speaker submission. I have two full days with my boyfriend to apartment shop and that weekend should be more geared towards finding a place. I really wanted to attend, but priorities need to be placed in other areas right now. I am considering attending SPS Bham, but I am not fully sure where I will be and if it’s at all possible fully. I may speak at theSSWUG.org VConference again this fall (maybe Omaha SPUG and ...
I was kicking myself last week wondering why am I not seeing a last logged out time in SharePoint. I talked to a few people and I guess I never really though about it. If you are using Active Directory, then there really is no last logged out time for SharePoint. There is a last logged out time in Active Directory, because AD is what is handling SharePoint. So when you logout and you close the browser, then open it back up with SharePoint it will show up with yourself fully logged in. I came up with ...

So I’ve been kind of busy lately in Omaha…I have a new gig that deals with FAST and SharePoint, but it’s government so I can’t really talk about it. So far I’ve met a person in Omaha related to SharePoint name Kirk Hofer. He is running the SPUG in Omaha. It sounds like it should be fun. Hopefully we can get a few SharePint’s going in the future. I just did our first unofficial SharePint event in KC…We had about 5 people…We might do another next month to see if we can get more if we hold it in Kansas. ...
